During the course of the fencing season described in the novel, as many as 14 students will be members of the Bark Bay High School fencing team. The team has a volunteer head coach who is also a teacher at the school, as well as a volunteer assistant coach who joins the team mid-way through the season.
The novel focuses on the head coach and six students who most often attend practices.
