Crickets and frogs filled the air with their gentle sounds of nature as Midge stared back at Marcellus, his arms folded confidently across his chest, waiting for her response. She could not help feeling he expected her to do nothing other than affirm the decision he had just announced to her.
She briefly considered telling him the truth, that never had she heard anyone sound so self-absorbed. Yet she realized she actually appreciated his honesty, was glad to see him for what he really was. The edge of the dock drifted into the corner of her vision, and she lowered her paddle down to the floor of the canoe.
