Chapter 2G

Annie told Butch to set his jacket to the side while they warmed up. As they got out of their jackets, Bernie returned with the sack of masks.

Annie saw Bernie walking into the cafeteria, she saw Kassandra standing in the doorway. Silent, still.

“You here for fencing, Kassie?” Annie called out to her.

Kassie flinched, and Annie believed she would turn and flee. But she stayed, standing in the doorway, as if she could not decide whether to run away or walk into the cafeteria.

Butch walked toward her. “Don’t be nervous. There’s no way you could be any worse than me at this.”

Kassandra smiled, and walked into the room.
